When to use temporary flooring protection paper?
Floor protection when moving appliances
Appliances are heavy objects which normally have sharp corners and adjustable legs on the underside, which makes them prime candidates for creating deep scratches on floors or, in a lot of kitchens, cracking tiles, especially if dropped.
When bulkier appliances such as washing machines or fridge freezers are moved, they are often ‘walked’, again this is something which should be protected against as, at the very least, it will scuff.
Floor protection when moving to a new house
When packing to move into a new house most people will consider protecting ornaments and furniture, such as vases, mirrors and glassware. However, bulkier items, often considered less prone to damage can often be the most problematic for floors.
It may be low on the list of priorities at such a busy time, but nothing causes more problems than an unhappy buyer, using flooring protection during a house move can save a lot of headache further down the line!
Floor protection when painting or redecorating
A relatively light weight flooring protection will usually suffice when redecorating, as the main aim is to protect flooring from paint spillages. However, it is imperative to ensure that all flooring is adequately covered as, in most cases, paint will find a way onto flooring or carpet if coverage is substandard.
When you’re eager to get started it can be tempting to simply throw sheets down, however there are a few key things to remember.
Firstly, make sure the flooring protection is secure. Using tape to keep edges help down or choosing a self-adhesive floor covering will stop everything moving around and save time, which would otherwise be spent putting sheets back in place! If your floor protection does come away from edges during decorating, don’t be tempted to leave it; it’s often the case that this is where you will spill some paint!
On stairs, a flexible floor covering such as Carpet Protection Film will work best, as it’s durable enough to walk on, but also not too rigid to fit.
Floor protection for parties and events
Parties have got to be one of the highest footfall occasions in any household and if not planned, can often leave carpets and wooden floors ruined. Spilled drinks, muddy boots and food can all make flooring look unrecognisable on post party clean up, and don’t forget the dreaded red wine on cream carpets!
Using rolled Promesh is an ideal solution for events and parties, particularly in the home, as it is not only durable enough to withstand a lot of people wining, dining and dancing the night away, but its also easy to put down, pick up and dispose of afterwards.
Don’t fancy covering your whole house? Why not use some temporary floor covering to cover a large area near the doorway, although this won’t protect against all spillages it leaves enough space for guests to leave their shoes, avoiding bringing the outdoors in.

Ground protection for BBQ’s and Garden Parties
If you’re planning a BBQ or garden party, particularly when there is a chance of wet weather (something which is unavoidable in Britain) then some ground protection can go a long way to preserving your lawn, paths and walkways from damage, whilst also reducing the chance of guests slipping.
Most outdoor ground protection is lightweight and can be reused, making it an ideal investment, that far outweighs the cost of having to replace turf and grass every year!
Which temporary floor protection is best?
The ‘best’ type of temporary flooring protection depends entirely upon its ability to meet your needs, to make the right choice, there are generally three areas to consider when selecting the right product for your domestic project.
Durability
If you use floor protection that’s not strong enough for the job, you may as well use none at all. A thinner polythene sheet for example won’t protect a tiled floor from the impact of a washing machine being dropped upon it. On the other hand, heavier duty coverings may be overkill for light domestic work such as decorating.
Make sure you assess your needs fully and above all, realistically before choosing your floor protection. Otherwise it could cost more in the long run.
Flexibility
Different jobs need different tools, it’s no different with temporary floor protection. Whilst heavy duty protection is a good ‘coverall’ for most floor surfaces, it can be too rigid for others.
Self-adhesive roll type protection is more flexible than sheeting and can be used safely on stairs, whilst also being suitable for covering larger areas more effectively.
Reusability
When considering ground cover for outdoors, it may be worth taking the reusability of the product in to account. Some ground covering tiles can be used multiple times, making them ideal if you’re the go to house for barbecue parties!
